2026年10月24日（土）～11月16日（月）の期間、新井健と谷川果菜絵によるアーティストデュオ、MESによる個展「レイ/RE-I」をPARCO MUSEUM TOKYO（渋谷PARCO 4F·東京都渋谷区宇田川町15-1）にて開催いたします。

MESは、2015年から現代美術とクラブカルチャーを軸に活動し、パフォーマンスとインスタレーションを展開するとともに、渋谷の数々のクラブにてレーザーVJとして活動し、音楽やファッションなど様々なカルチャーとの交差点を渡り歩いてきたアーティストです。MESの作風は、都市にレーザーのメッセージを照射していく「LASER WRI-/LIGH-TING」シリーズ(2018-2021)やロウソクを用いた抵抗のパフォーマンス《WAX P-L/R-A-E-Y》(2024-)など、都市や時代の変化を機敏に感じ取り、様々なテクノロジーと身体を用いてそれらに鋭く応答してきました。渋谷を拠点として活動してきたMESと、渋谷の街からカルチャーを発信してきたパルコによる本展は、変化し続ける渋谷の街を新たな角度でとらえなおす試みとして、この街にひそむ歴史のレイヤーを浮かび上がらせる映像インスタレーションや、デュレーショナルなパフォーマンスを中心に構成します。

2027年2月にアメリカ、ロサンゼルス現代美術館での個展を控え、ますます国内外での活躍が注目されるアーティスト・デュオMESの個展「レイ／RE-I」をぜひご覧ください。

We are pleased to present RE-I, a solo exhibition by MES, the artist duo of Takeru Arai and Kanae Tanikawa, at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO (Shibuya PARCO 4F, 15-1 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) from Saturday, October 24 through Monday, November 16, 2026.

Active since 2015, MES has developed a practice rooted in contemporary art and club culture, working across performance and installation while also engaging with Tokyo’s club scene as laser VJs. Moving fluidly across the intersections of music, fashion, and other forms of contemporary culture, the duo has continually explored new ways of responding to the city and its shifting cultural landscape.

MES’s practice is characterized by a keen sensitivity to changes in the city and the times, to which they respond incisively through the use of technology and the body. Their works include the LASER WRI-/LIGH-TING series (2018–2021), in which laser messages were projected into urban spaces, and WAX P-L/R-A-E-Y (2024–), a durational performance incorporating candles as a form of resistance.

With this exhibition, MES and PARCO—both deeply rooted in Shibuya and engaged in shaping and disseminating the city’s culture—come together to reconsider the ever-changing landscape of Shibuya from a new perspective. The exhibition will primarily comprise video installations that bring to the surface the layers of history embedded within the city, alongside durational performances that unfold over time.

MES is scheduled to present a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in February 2027, further drawing international attention to their increasingly active practice. We invite you to experience RE-I, a solo exhibition by MES, and encounter their distinctive perspective on the city, its history, and its continually evolving cultural landscape.

「レイ/RE-I」とは

これまで、Reborn Art Festival 2021夏での《サイ／SA-I》(2021)に始まり、《タイ／TA-I》(2022)、《ガイ／GA-I》(2023)、《ダイ／DA-I》(2024)、《カイ／KA-I》(2025)など、ひとつの言葉から生まれる様々な意味を複層的に重ね合わせる作品シリーズを展開してきたMES。

今回の個展「レイ／RE-I」では零(0)／霊／冷／Ray(光線)／レイヤー／レイヴ／隷／令／黎／麗…といった「レイ」と読む言葉から、渋谷の忘れられた歴史を拾い上げ、身体的アクションを通して現代に反射させていきます。

MES has developed a series of works that layers and intertwines the multiple meanings that emerge from a single word, beginning with SA-I (2021), presented at Reborn Art Festival 2021 Summer, followed by TA-I (2022), GA-I (2023), DA-I (2024), and KA-I (2025)

.

For the solo exhibition RE-I, MES draws upon a constellation of words pronounced “rei” : 零 (rei, zero), 霊 (rei, spirit), 冷 (rei, cold), as well as Ray (a beam of light), layer, rave, 隷 (rei, servitude), 令 (rei, command), 黎 (rei, dawn), 麗 (rei, beauty), and others. Through these overlapping meanings, MES excavates fragments of Shibuya’s forgotten histories and reflects them back into the present through physical actions.

Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group

2005年に東京で結成されたアーティスト・コレクティブ。メンバーは卯城竜太、林靖高、エリイ、岡田将孝、稲岡求、水野俊紀。現代社会に介入したプロジェクトを通して世界各地の展覧会に参加、森美術館、Dallas Contemporaryなどで個展を開催。Centre Pompidou、Solomon R. Guggenheim Museumなど国内外の美術館に作品が収蔵されている。

福島第1原発事故に伴う帰還困難区域内での展覧会「Don't Follow the Wind」の発案・参加など、さまざまな自主企画を展開。

2022年4月、Chim↑PomからChim↑Pom from Smappa!Groupに改名。

Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group is an artist collective formed in Tokyo in 2005. The collective comprises Ryuta Ushiro, Yasuyuki Hayashi, Ellie, Masataka Okada, Motomu Inaoka, and Toshiki Mizuno. Through projects that engage directly with contemporary social issues, the collective has participated in exhibitions around the world and held solo exhibitions at institutions including Mori Art Museum and Dallas Contemporary. Its works are held in the collections of major museums in Japan and abroad, including Centre Pompidou and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

The collective has also initiated a wide range of independent projects, including Don’t Follow the Wind, an exhibition conceived and organized by the collective in the “difficult-to-return zone” following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

In April 2022, the collective changed its name from Chim↑Pom to Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group.

Since the opening of Ikebukuro PARCO in 1969, PARCO has actively introduced a wide range of culture, from fashion to music, art, theater, and beyond. Through these activities, PARCO has sought to discover new talent and support those who have the vision and confidence to shape their own futures.

In 2010, PARCO launched its corporate message “LOVE HUMAN.” to celebrate and support emerging talent. Since 2014, under the corporate message “SPECIAL IN YOU.,” PARCO has continued to actively promote its incubation initiatives, discovering and supporting young designers, artists, and creators.

PARCO has selected MES as the 27th featured artist of its “SPECIAL IN YOU.” project. The campaign is scheduled to be unveiled in mid-October.

Tokyo-based artist duo formed in 2015 by Tanikawa Kanae and Arai Takeru. À la dérive between club culture and contemporary art, they stage performances and create installations that sometimes quietly, sometimes intensely illuminate the darkness of the world through light and heat. Recent solo exhibitions include P-L／R-A／E-Y (2024) and DISTANCE OF RESISTANCE (2021). Presentations in group shows include DA-I at MYAF 2024 (SSS: Super Spectrum Specification), Salvage Club at Overland_SPILL OVER#1, and SA-I at Reborn Art Festival 2021 Summer. As laser VJs, they have created immersive visual worlds for parties such as CLUB SKIN and WAIFU, and designed the stage vision for the solo live performance of Dos Monos, among others. Employing collaborative, intersectional approaches, their practice involves constant experimentation and exploration in stage directing, performing, and organizing, as can be seen in the REVOLIC—Revolution Holic(2022-) party they hosted and the exhibition on Russian political prisoners, Through The Bars(2025).
